Kovk

Kovk is a Karst-edge launch in western Slovenia at 846 metres, sitting on the ridge above the Vipava valley near Ajdovščina. Facing SE through S and SW around to W, it's a summer thermal site that pairs well with the more famous Kobala/Tolmin XC scene an hour to the north, but with far less traffic. The Vipava valley is a well-known convergence corridor: sea breeze from the Adriatic meets continental air pushing down from the Alps, and Kovk sits right on the collision line. Expect strong cycles at midday in July and August and be honest with yourself about the burja (bora) — this whole region shuts down hard when the katabatic north-easterly kicks off the Nanos ridge. It's an autonomous pilot site with a straightforward grass launch and a landing in the valley below.

Local rules & hazards

Never fly if the burja is forecast — this is the highest-priority safety call on the whole Karst edge and it can develop in minutes. The Nanos ridge to the north is the trigger. Airspace: stay under the Ljubljana FIR ceiling and clear of the Ajdovščina airfield circuit.
