Kobala (Tolmin)

Kobala is the main launch above Tolmin, in the Slovenian Soča valley — the flying capital of the Julian Alps. The take-off sits at about 1,061 m and works on a wide window from east through south to west, which is why Tolmin hosts world-class cross-country events. From launch you can push south along the Soča toward Nova Gorica or turn deep into the massif toward Krn (2,200 m). Mornings often go on an easterly flow, and the day switches to a thermic westerly breeze around midday. In July and August a local shuttle runs from the landing every day starting at 10:00, so pilots without a car can fly. A site fee to the local paragliding club is required — 4 € for one day, 10 € for three, 20 € for ten, or 35 € for the season. Launch & conditions

Kobala is reached by a small road about 15 km from Tolmin. A morning easterly gets the site going; the thermic west typically kicks in around 13:00. Read the wind direction on launch before committing — the site works on multiple sectors and the useful one changes through the day.

Getting there & local rules

Three road approaches: from Nova Gorica; from Ljubljana via Idrija, Most na Soči and Tolmin; or from Bovec/Kobarid. The landing sits about 2 km after Tolmin on the road toward Kobarid, on the right along a dirt track roughly 500 m off the main road — a helipad on the field is the reference point. AVOID landing at or near the helipad. The bail-out field is in front of Tolmin, where the road splits in a Y shape. The ParaTaxi back to launch is 8 € per person with a 30 € minimum.

Local rules & hazards

A site fee is payable to the local club, from a daily rate up to a season pass. Avoid landing at or near the helipad. The valley wind here can become quite strong.
