Motovun is one of Croatian Istria's most photogenic flying sites — you launch just below the walls of the medieval hilltop town, with restaurants above you and a river valley below. The land is club-leased, effectively private: no flying without notifying the site operator first. Takeoff is steep and narrow — big enough to lay out two wings side by side but only one can launch at a time. Because the town watches, pilots are asked to fly conservatively, not too close to buildings or people, and to stay in front of the old town rather than above it.

Launch & conditions

Steep and narrow takeoff just below the old city walls. Room for two wings to lay out side by side but only one launches at a time. Do not fly close to buildings or people; keep your line in front of the old town rather than above it.

Getting there & local rules

In tourist season, a daily parking fee applies at the bottom of Motovun. You can drive half-way up and park near the cemetery, then walk about 200 m. Access to takeoff: to the right just before the arched town gate (past the rubbish containers), down the stairs and through fruit trees. Landing: next to the bridge over the Mirna river down in the valley.

Local rules & hazards

Contact the site operator before flying — land is club-leased, no flying without prior notice. Bura (NE wind): takeoff sits in the rotor of a NE wind blowing over the old town, and the windsock may show a misleading direction. If unsure, walk around the city walls to read the real wind. Fly conservatively — high public exposure.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Motovun, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Motovun with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
