Bishops Hill

Bishops Hill looks out over the Fife countryside from above Kinneswood, and it is first and foremost a soaring hill: a broad, flat top, generous space to land back on, and a slope that works through a wide arc from southwest round to northwest. Cross-country is possible and flights of 30 to 40 km go in good conditions, but the geography sets the ceiling — the Firth of Tay, the Firth of Forth and the North Sea sit downwind of most routes out, and controlled airspace shapes the rest. Wave is the local speciality. In a northwesterly the hill will often produce light wave, which is unusual for a site this accessible and can be rough underneath. The hill is shared with speedflyers, and paragliders and sailplanes both pass at or below ridge height often enough that a good look around belongs in the routine here.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is a wide, flat area along the top with plenty of room, and it takes southwest, west and northwest. Top landing is straightforward given the space.

Getting there & local rules

About 35 minutes from Edinburgh, in Fife — head for Kinneswood. Park near the primary school, taking care not to park close to the foot of the hill or block the gate at the top of the road, then allow around 25 minutes for the walk up.

Local rules & hazards

Do not land in fields holding livestock, particularly in early spring, and avoid fields with crops standing; use gates rather than climbing fences. Cross-country routes run up against controlled airspace near Glenrothes and Leuchars, so check before committing downwind. In winter, cold air compressing around the hill often means landing roughly 90 degrees off the prevailing wind, and the wave conditions here can be turbulent underneath.
