Yastrebetc

Yastrebets is a high-mountain launch in the Rila range above Borovets, sitting at nearly 2,200 m with room to lay out a dozen wings at once. The character of the site changes completely through the year. Spring and early summer bring a dynamic atmosphere with strong, high-topped thermals and real cloud development; late summer and autumn settle into moderate or light conditions that make for relaxed flying; and with the right clothing it can even be flown in winter. What does not change is the scale of the air. Rila generates powerful circulation and pronounced valley winds, and the source description is unambiguous about what that means: flying here is a serious undertaking that demands a considered decision at every stage, suited to experienced pilots and not recommended for beginners. Landing choices depend heavily on which way the valley wind is running.

Launch & conditions

The takeoff faces the north-northeast through north-northwest arc and lies about 300 m below the upper lift station, roughly thirty minutes on foot. There is space to lay out a dozen wings at once.

From the Borovets resort, either take the gondola or allow about four hours on foot.

Local rules & hazards

In most conditions the valley wind comes from the northeast and the landing is the meadow by the old collective farm near the stadium — note that the ground there is fenced and locked. The alternative on the right-hand side of the road from Borovets only works with a west-northwesterly. East and northeast winds generate dangerous rotor around the road to Borovets, so in those conditions commit to the stadium approach rather than the roadside clearings.
