Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain sits in the remote northern edge of Colorado's Sand Wash Basin Wild Horse Management Area — a public-land ridge you'll often share with a herd of wild horses grazing right on top. Cell service is good (AT&T especially). Wind pattern is seasonal: N through W in winter and spring, shifting S through W for summer, then back to N through W in fall. The best flying window opens once the snow clears — April, May and early June — with favourable winds and open access.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is possible all along the ridge. Near the towers is suggested — larger grassy area with short grass. The fence along the north side of the road keeps the wild horses in the management area, but the land is public on both sides of the fence.

Getting there & local rules

The area needs a higher-clearance vehicle for the uneven road up the hill. A lower-clearance vehicle can be used if you park and hike before the switchbacks on the west side of Lookout Mountain. There's a workable turnaround before the steepest section if you need to reverse. The turn for Sand Wash Basin is signposted on Highway 318. Lookout Mountain is also accessible from the north and east via county road 4 (paved), with a variety of dirt roads coming off it.

Local rules & hazards

Wild horses are typically on top — give them space; the fence is for their management area, not access. Best flying window is April through early June.
