Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-country

Cove Mountain (Richfield–Monroe) is a classic Utah XC site — a ridge finger extending miles into the Sevier Valley, 3,300 ft above the plain, with three usable launch directions. Evening ridge lift can push you 3,000 ft over launch, looking down on mountain lakes and streams below the 3,000 ft cliffs of Color Country. Thermals can carry you all the way to the Wasatch Plateau — thermalling above Skyline Drive, a 60-mile mountain-ridge road between the Sanpete and Carbon valleys, is a legitimate ambition. USHPA and CUASA membership required.

Launch & conditions

West takeoff: wide, top-landing possible, relatively easy. South takeoff: narrow, moderate. North takeoff: very small and stony, difficult.

Getting there & local rules

30+ minutes up a dirt road from Annabella; 2WD possible but 4WD recommended. Landings: the old LZ below launch in Annabella is NO LONGER available. Land at the Monroe Peak LZ (Monroe's Rodeo Ground) — watch for power lines.

Local rules & hazards

USHPA AND CUASA membership required. Do NOT use the old Annabella LZ — no longer available. Monroe Peak LZ (Monroe's Rodeo Ground) — watch for power lines.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Cove (Richfield – Monroe), read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Cove (Richfield – Monroe) with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
