Box Canyon (Tucson)

Box Canyon on the west side of the Santa Rita Mountains, 30 minutes south of Tucson, is an afternoon site with wonderful evening glass-offs. It works in SW-through-N winds. This is desert flying — dehydration and heat exhaustion are real hazards, and desert vegetation eats wings. Inexperienced pilots should limit flights to evenings under the guidance of a local pilot, and never attempt to fly this site for the first time without a local guide.

Getting there & local rules

30 minutes south of Tucson, west side of the Santa Rita Mountains. Dirt Forest Road (2WD to LZ) and hike up the front; this is Arizona State Trust land — individual or family recreational-use permits are required to hike to launch. Or 4WD to the back parking and a shorter hike up the back over USFS land. Landing: fairly large field at about 4,400 ft MSL, Arizona State Trust land under a SAHGA group activity permit.

Local rules & hazards

P3, or P2 with an instructor or local guide. USHPA site insurance and membership required. SAHGA club radio frequency 151.925 (USHPA Ch. 2). Emergencies: 911, Pima County Sheriff. Desert flying hazards: rain or virga produces gust fronts and microbursts — watch for overdevelopment or lines of moving dust. Bring plenty of water for the hike up. Desert vegetation has teeth and eats wings of the careless. Do NOT attempt to fly this site for the first time without a local guide.
