Marvão

Marvão flies from directly beneath the walls of one of Portugal's most striking hilltop villages, and the view over the castle and out across the border country is a large part of why pilots come. It is a grassy field with a natural ramp, which suits hang gliders as much as paragliders, and in the right conditions the thermals here will take you high enough to run cross-country into Spain. The launch itself is the part to respect: the edge generates rotor and it is not a takeoff for a pilot's first season. Best soaring comes with a moderate southwesterly. The bigger consideration is the landing, which is not an official field but private ground used by permission in practice, so the site's future rests on pilots behaving well — checking for livestock, clearing the field promptly, and packing up somewhere sensible.

Launch & conditions

A grassy field just below the village's defensive wall, with a ramp-like slope that suits hang glider launches. The edge produces rotor, so the takeoff is slightly technical and not one for beginners. Best soaring comes with a wind of roughly 15 to 20 km/h from the southwest.

Getting there & local rules

The launch is reached from Marvão village, through a small metal gate just above it that is normally unlocked. If it is locked, walk around and climb up to the takeoff from below.

Local rules & hazards

Check airspace and NOTAMs before flying. The landing is not an official one, so treat it with care: the large grass field in front of takeoff is the best option, but do not land there when livestock are present, leave the field before folding your wing, and pack up in one of the surrounding parking areas. The field is fenced, with a few low points near the parking. Other fields further out, a golf course and a usually empty car park serve as alternatives in low season.
