Ohiwa Hill (Onekawa Pa)

Ohiwa Hill, the historic Onekawa Pā site on the New Zealand Bay of Plenty coast, is a compact coastal soaring spot east of Whakatane. The 97 m launch works on north through northwest wind, with clean air off the ocean and White Island (Whakaari) as a hazy landmark 50 km offshore to the north. Take-off direction should always point toward Whale Island (northwest) to avoid the tall Pōhutukawa trees straight north. The landing beach runs between a Norfolk Pine and the shoreline — plenty of options at low tide, but a busy summer campground downstairs means holiday season landings demand extra respect. The hill is DOC land run as an active farm; campground owners appreciate a heads-up before you fly, and pilots always leave gates as they find them. West-of-northwest days look flyable and are not — the airflow gives it away quickly.

Launch & conditions

Take off from the flat top of the Pa or, in stronger flow, a little lower on the northwest face. The cleanest layout is on the very back southern ridge, as far west as possible. Straight north launches invite sinking into the Pōhutukawa grove. Northwest is fine in front of the ridge, but don't fly past the small spur east into the bowl facing north — it turns turbulent on the western side. Top-landings are expert-only. Any easterly component makes the site essentially unlaunchable.

Getting there & local rules

40 minutes east of Whakatane, 20 minutes west of Ōpōtiki. Take the Onekawa Pā exit off SH-2, left over the bridge, up the hill, then right onto Ohiwa Harbour Road. First house on the right (with a windsock) belongs to local pilots — friendly stop for info. Continue to the Ohiwa Harbour Campground entrance on the left. Park across the road, walk to the reception office, and let the owners know your intentions before heading up the walking track. No bikes on the tracks; vehicle access needs prior DOC permission.

Local rules & hazards

This is DOC conservation land and a working farm, so leave gates as found and don't drive up without permission. It flies best in NNW-N; westerly and easterly winds look flyable but turn turbulent or unlaunchable. The sea breeze can flip from gentle NNW to strong southerly within minutes near dusk, so land before sunset.
