Perran Sands

Perran Sands is a low, gentle west-to-north-west facing coastal soaring site on the north Cornwall coast, used for both hang-glider and paraglider training. The dune-and-clifftop launch sits inside a holiday centre, so parking and access run through the reception office. Conditions are typical UK soaring — clean sea air from the west, easy top and bottom landings when the tide is out and the direction is right. It is also a live training area, so keep the launch and landing zones clear when you're not actively flying. The site's real character comes from the airspace around it: a live military firing range to the north, and the Perranporth Airfield ATZ immediately to the south, both of which shape every flight decision.

Getting there & local rules

From Perranporth take the B3285 north-west; at the top of the hill turn left onto the Holiday Centre approach road. Check in at reception — the club pays an annual arrangement, so members get a parking ticket free on production of a valid membership card. Park in the marked area next to the flying zone; overflow parking is in the paid day-visitor car park.

Local rules & hazards

The site sits in a Military Low Flying Area with an active firing range to the north — never overfly when the red flag is hoisted, and watch for military helicopters. The Perranporth Airfield ATZ starts 100 yards south; if you will exceed 60 ft above take-off, clear your flying with the airfield beforehand. Expect sink and rotor above and behind the caravans — never overfly them, especially on landing approach.
