Pic des Mouches on the Sainte-Victoire ridge is the historical launch of the mountain — a natural rocky takeoff, not for beginners, but the traditional starting point for the classic Sainte-Victoire XC line: 50 km across the Provençal flatlands, then straight into the Alps. Flights of more than 150 km have been done from here. The only way up is on foot, either from the south face or the north face — the club's website has the detail. Weekday flying comes with a serious airspace and military-zone framework: read it carefully before you launch.

Launch & conditions

Natural rocky takeoff. NOT recommended for beginners.

Getting there & local rules

The only way in is on foot — either from the south face or from the north face. Landings: the official LZ is at the Saint-Ser restaurant. Alternatives include Puits d'Auzon and various other fields — be careful of crops, and note that some forest sections offer simply no landing option, so plan glide accordingly.

Local rules & hazards

Do NOT fly in any north-component wind. Marseille airport TMAs restrict you to 760 m ceiling west of the mountain, 1,400 m south of the mountain — flying along the ridge is fine. The Cadarache nuclear site is a ZIT forbidden from ground to 1,300 m within a circle. Military ZRT sometimes active on weekdays 900–2,400 m between Durance and Luberon, ~20 km north of the mountain. Military helicopter training zone R95A active ground–1,800 m about 40 km east of the mountain.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Sainte – Victoire – Pic des Mouches, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Sainte – Victoire – Pic des Mouches with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
