Mount Tamborine sits above the Gold Coast hinterland south of Brisbane, one of south-east Queensland's classic flying sites — a sealed-road access, west-facing launch at 584 m ASL. Rating is Intermediate for paragliders (Restricted with instructor/safety officer supervision below that); Restricted for hang gliders. Wind directions NW through SW work, and a common day here starts with a morning westerly then flips to a SE or NE sea breeze reaching the launch in the early afternoon. Spring and summer bring strong thermals with the possibility of major sink cycles — watch bombout distance carefully.

Launch & conditions

Sealed road to the site along Main Western Rd, Mt. Tamborine. Rating: PG Intermediate (Restricted with instructor supervision), HG Restricted. Wind NW–SW. Elevation 584 m ASL (1,916 ft). CTA 7,500 ft.

Getting there & local rules

Toilets at launch; shops within a 5-minute drive north. Waypoints: launch 56J 0517723, 6908105. Old Training Hill (NO LANDING) 56J 0513330, 6906400 area.

Local rules & hazards

Open to club members and visiting pilots. Prime spectator spot — park only in designated areas, as police actively ticket parking violations. Weather Talker available on UHF Channel 25 (Tone Squelch 97.4, 6 clicks). Spring and summer: strong thermals with major sink cycles possible — know bombout distances. Common transition from westerly morning wind to a SE/NE sea breeze in the early afternoon: a helper watching your wind streamers behind you is worthwhile before an HG launch, since a tailwind onset is hard to see once you're set up.

Check conditions before you fly

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
